Uwe Cantner How Is Economic Change Influenced by Innovations?
Uwe Cantner is primarily affiliated with the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, where he holds a professorship in economics, and is the Director of the Jena Graduate School of Human Behavior in Social and Economic Change. Since 2015 he is member of the Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation (Expertenkommission Forschung und Innovation - EFI) that advises the German Federal Government. In 2012 he was appointed President of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society, a society devoted to the field of evolutionary economics, and brought the 2014 ISS Conference to Jena. Cantner’s interests range from the Economics of Innovation and Change to Evolutionary Economics and Theories of Productivity. His most recent publications explore the connection between technology and innovation in the field of economics, as well as themes around social and economic change in an interdisciplinary context.

Innovation can be both creative and destructive. It creates new patterns of social and economic life, while at the same time destroying or reforming existing ones. That means that innovations are the product of a given economic system and at the same time change the system they are part of. As UWE CANTNER points out in this video, the economics of innovation and change is shaped by different actors, which influence each other and together contribute to overall structural change. Research thus far has been unable to explain this structural change theoretically and provide empirical evidence. But by combining different theoretical lines of thinking an economic pattern that responds to economic reality can be drawn up.
